Junior Inter-Club Championship regional finals
Due to winning the league we got to the Junior Inter - Club Championship regional finals held at Cookridge Hall Golf Club. Our team was Chris Wilcox (C), Chris Woodhead, Chris Watts, Robert Malloy, Matthew Weldon and William Rae. As I played on the day myself I can say 5 of us made a complete mess of this…. There were no excuses we just did really badly. All bar 6th man William Rae who shot the best score on our team by a mile. Well-done William.
Reports for 2006.
JUNIOR TEAM v WEST BRADFORD
6th August 2006
Our final match of the season was against West Bradford
away. With this match to play we were 7 points clear at the
top of the table. Due to this we needed just 2 points to
guarantee the league no matter what any other team did. The
team was Oliver Young, Chris Wilcox (c), Robert Malloy and Chris
Woodhead. Oliver Young (2) once again was selected for
the team and started with a good drive on the first. Oliver
once again giving 3 shots on an away course struggled to fend off
his opponent. After 14 holes the match ended with a 5/4 loss
for Oliver. Chris Wilcox (6) played D. Virr (11). Leading
the team again our captain had the difficult task of playing a
true bandit. In usual style he played well but due to having
to give away shots he was unfortunately beaten 5/4. Robert
Malloy (9) was also giving shots to his opponent making his job
very hard. Rob playing well battled hard and was soon
3up. After the shots started for his opponent Rob fell back
to 1 down. Not managing to regain his advantage the match
went down the last hole. Rob making a solid par was unlucky
only to half the hole and loose 1 down. Chris Woodhead (10)
played the same opponent as in the home match was looking for
another victory. Having to give 8 shots it looked like a
hard task to complete. After the 5th the match
was all square but he had to give three shots in a row.
After this he was 2 down having played 8 holes. Turning the
match round Chris won the 9th, 10th,
11th and 12th to go 2up. After the
17th the match was 1up in favour of Northcliffe the
match advanced down the 18th hole. Chris making a
good up and down par won the match 2up. The support on
the day from William Rae, Martin Wilcox and the young family was
greatly appreciated. This result means that NORTHCLIFFE ARE
BRADFORD AND DISTRICT JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONS for the
first time since 1997! This result may not have been
possible without the support the team has received throughout the
year from other juniors, Parents and friends. For this I
would like to thank William Rae, Matthew Weldon, Matthew
Stanworth, Oliver Towler, Richard Watts, Martin Wilcox, Patrick
Young, Graham Young, and anybody else I haven't mentioned.
Most of all on behalf of all the juniors I would like to thank
PHIL CHESTER for all the time he has devoted to the junior section
this year as junior convenor. All his time and effort is
greatly appreciated.
Next Step for the Team in 2006 The team will play
next at Cookridge hall golf club on September the 27th
in the Regional finals. If we manage to finish
1st or 2nd there then we will progress
further. On the day at Cookridge a 6 man team is played not
just a 4 man team. The team for this has not yet been
decided upon.
JUNIOR TEAM V BAILDON
Sunday 9th July (Home)
Our ninth match of the season was against Baildon golf
club round our home course. The team was strong even in the
absence of Oliver Young. The team for this match was Chris
Wilcox (c), Chris Watts, Chris Woodhead and Robert Malloy. Chris
Wilcox (8) (Wilcox) our junior captain had just come from back to
back wins away at Bradford (8/7) and Calverley (3/2). After 17
holes at which point Wilcox was 3under gross and 1up the match went
down the last in true Wilcox style. After watching his
opponent just miss the green he showed what he is made of and ripped
it to 4ft for 1 and canned the putt for the win. Therefore
meaning he won 2up. Chris Watts (9) (Ernie) made a return to the
team after loosing his previous 3. Looking for a good win to
regain pride he set off in style. Playing solid golf and being
in control all the way through he ran out a outstanding 5/3 victory
after playing some great golf.
Chris Woodhead (11) made a great
start to the season with 6 wins on the trot. Unfortunately he
then lost 2 so was looking for a good win to regain the confidence he
once had. Playing some good golf he was 2up after 11 at which
point he turned up the heat and won the 12th ,
13th and 14th to win 5/4.
Robert Malloy
(13) was looking for another solid performance as usual to win
again. Playing some good golf Robert gained a lead on his
match. As Robert had gone out last he left everybody waiting
for him wondering what the result would be. Before Roberts
match the team had taken all 6 points so we were counting on Rob to
provide the last win for an 8-0 victory. After seeing Robert
emerge on the last tee we all began to worry only to be reassured
when Robert said the match had ended on the 17 with a solid 2/1
victory for Northcliffe. Meaning the Final score was
8-0. This Great result means that we have qualified to play at
Cookridge hall on September the 27th. Also it means
that we only need 2 points at West Bradford to guarantee winning the
league no matter what anybody else does.
JUNIOR TEAM v CALVERLEY
18th June 2006
Our 8th match of the season was against Calverley
away. The team this week was Oliver Young, Chris
Wilcox(c), Chris Woodhead and Robert Malloy. After beating
Calverley at home 7-1 we went looking for another good result.
Before this match we were 4 points ahead of second place West
Bradford. Even though we had a good lead it was not yet enough
to enable us to sit back and relax. With 3 matches to go it is
by no means over yet. Oliver Young (3) played against D. Hall
(4). Oliver giving a shot had the hard task of playing Danny
hall. The match started slowly as both players were putting
100% into every shot. Neither player was able to gather a
substantial lead. Neither player stayed at more than 1up for
long. After the 16th Oliver was Dormie 2 down
requiring too win the final two holes to half the match.
Attacking his birdie put on the 17th it rolled a long way
past and Oliver made bogie. Loosing the hole to a par he lost
3-1 Chris Wilcox (9) played A. Jesusko (8). Chris received
1 shot from his opponent. Making a solid start our junior
captain continued to play some outstanding golf. On many
previous weeks we have seen a slow start from Chris leaving himself
3 or 4 down before he starts to play well. This week was a
different matter; he broke away early with a mass of pars and
birdies. Looking strong throughout he ran out a 3/2
victory. Chris Woodhead (12) played J. Littlewood (11). After
halving the first with bogies Chris opponent turned up the heat
making a birdie at the second then a par on the third and a birdie
at the fourth. Finding himself 3 down after four Chris had to
take action. The 5th was halved then Chris won the
6th, 7th 8th and 9th to
go 1up. After this point the match swayed between 1up and
1down for each player. Every hole being won with a par or a
birdie except the first the standard was high. After some
misfortune on the 15 th and 16th Chris became
Dormie 2 down. Making a par at the 17th he lost
2/1. Robert Malloy (13) played C. Simmons (12).
Calverley being one of Roberts favourite courses to play we had high
hopes for him in this match. During the practice round earlier
in the week Rob played outstanding golf. The match day was a
different story however. Each player struggled on the day which ment
that silly high scores could win a hole. Thankfully Rob pulled
through in the end and won 2up. We have a 2 week rest in-between
the matches but as always team spirit will remain high until then.
Our next match will be at home against Baildon.
JUNIOR TEAM v BRADFORD
11 th June 2006
Our 7th match of the season was against
Bradford away. The team this week was Oliver Young, Chris
Wilcox(c), Chris Woodhead and Robert Malloy. Unfortunately
there was no reserve to be played this week. After beating
Bradford at home 8-0 we went looking for another good result.
Before this match we were 6 points ahead of second place West
Bradford and 9 points ahead of 3 rd place Bradford.
Even though we had a good lead it was not yet enough to enable us to
sit back and relax.
Oliver Young (3) played against D. Chadwick
(5). Oliver has had a consistent season for the team this year only
loosing once previously. Starting slowly he struggled from the start
due to playing at an away course. Struggling through he became
Dormie 4 down after the 14th where he began a last
attempt to salvage a point but was unfortunate to loose
2/1.
Chris Wilcox (9) played L. Matthews (5). Chris
received 3 shots from his opponent. Making a solid start our
junior captain continued to play outstanding golf. In previous
matches we have seen a slow start from Chris which usually leaves
him 3 or 4 down before he starts to play well. This week was a
different matter he broke away early with a mass of pars and
birdies. After the 12th, having made 6 birdies, he
hammered home an outstanding 8/7 victory.
Chris Woodhead
(12) played P. Gresswell (7). He received 4 shots from his
opponent. After a birdie from his opponent on the first Chris
found himself 1 down. The match then swayed between each of
the players with neither able to become more than 1up. After
the 9th being situated at 1 up Chris continued on the
10th where he had a 10ft put for par to win the hole,
leaving the put on the lip of the hole the score remained 1up.
After the 13th the match was all square and a silly error
gave the opposition the advantage. Winning the next hole it
was once again all square but then after a few bad shots Chris lost
the 16th and 17th to loose 2/1.
Robert
Malloy (13) played A. Gawthrop (10). Robert having a solid
start obtained a 1 up lead after 5 holes. Robert not playing
badly but being victim of a great run of holes from his opponent saw
his lead disappear and fell behind by the turn. After a
continued good run of holes from his opponent, including 3 birdies,
Robert unfortunately lost 6/5.
Our next match is once again
away. This time we venture to Calverley for the return fixture
of 2006. Thanks to Chris Watts for the support at Bradford, it
is very much appreciated.
JUNIOR TEAM v BEN RHYDDING
28th May 2006
Our 6th match of the season was against
Ben Rhydding at home. This is the return fixture from our
first match of the 2006 season. The team this week was Chris
Wilcox(c), Chris Watts, Chris Woodhead and Robert Malloy.
Matthew Stanworth was the reserve this week. Chris Wilcox
(8) played Tom Heathcoat (14). Chris had to give 5 shots to
his opponent. Making a solid par at the 1 st to
go 1up he then made a good birdie at the 2nd to stay
there. Our junior captain having made this fine start
continued to make pars at the 3rd and 4th
and became 2up. After this the match continued into the
first shot holes for his opponent but playing consistently he won
the 5th to go 3up, this being totally different to
Chris's usually preferred 4 down approach. The match
was at the same score after the 7th where the lead was
becoming more comfortable. After loosing the 8th
determination kicked in and he then won the 9th to go
back to 3up at the turn. Advancing to 4up after 11 Mr Wilcox
then made a great up and down on the 12th for the half
but then lost the 13th due to giving his opponent a
shot. After also loosing the 14th he battled on
to birdie the 15th to go dormie 3up. After a
great par on the 16th the match still continued because
his opponent also made par but received another shot.
Summing up the day Chris then made a good par on the
17th to win the hole and match 3/1. Chris
Watts (Ernie) (9) played Scott Bullock (15). Ernie had to
give away 5 shots to his opponent. After his opponent made
par at the 1st Ernie found himself 1 down but after a
half at the 2nd he replied with a birdie at the
3rd to go back to all square. After a good run
from his opponent Ernie lost the 4th, 5th,
6th and 7th and found himself 4 down.
Managing to get a half at the 8th he started damage
limitation till he was once again unlucky to loose the hole at the
9th to become 5 down at the turn. Then 2 halves
and win followed on the 10th, 11th and
12th putting the match back to 4 down. Then
winning the 13th a comeback had been initiated by Ernie
and he was back to 3. Then making halves with his partner on
the 14th and 15th. Unfortunately then
loosing the 16th Ernie lost 4/2. Chris
Woodhead (12) played Adam Lockwood (17). Chris gave 4 shots
to his opponent. After a solid start from his opponent the
match was 3 up after 3 to Adam Lockwood. The match was still
in the same position after 5. Chris then had a good spell
making par at the 6th, 7th, 8th
and 9th which took the match back to just 1 down.
Continuing the good run he made par on the 10th, birdie
on the 11th and par on 12th to become 1up
and gain the lead for the first time on the day. Halving the
13th and 14th he stayed 1 up. Then
making another par on the 15th his lead advanced to 2up
with 3 to play. Then loosing the 16th and the
17th Chris found himself on the 18th tee all
square. His opponent narrowly missing the green he stepped
up and hit his onto the green giving him an advantage. Adam
knocking his chip past the hole leaving him a tricky long return
putt. Making a silly error Chris left his first put 5ft
short. Adam missing his return gave Chris his put for the
match. Sinking the put he won 1up. Robert Malloy
(13) played Andrew Malley (19). Robert was giving 5 shots to
his opponent. After being 2down after 2 and getting a half
at the 3rd Robert responded with a birdie 2 on the 4
th. Then loosing the 5th due to giving
a shot he fought back by winning the 6th and
7th. Then loosing the 8th he was back
to 1 down. After being 3 off the tee on the 9th
Robert sunk a wonder put for an excellent half to stay 1 down at
the turn. After loosing the 10th because of a
shot for his opponent Malloy turned up the heat with a birdie on
the 11th then a par on 12th to win both
holes and go back to all square. The match was still all
square after the 16th Robert then won the
17th leaving him dormie 1up. After leaving his
tee shot slightly short Robert stiffed his chip and made three
leaving his opponent, who had hit the green, needing to make
birdie 2 to half the match. A great put followed for the
birdie meaning that the match was halved. Matthew
Stanworth (Stanny) (17) played as reserve. Stanny was 3 up
after winning all of the first 3. After winning 1 and
loosing 2 he was back to 2up after 6 so he replied with a birdie
on 7 having played his third shot from 150 yards to 1ft from the
hole. Stanny being 3up at the turn looked in good control
and the advanced to 4up after the 11th. Playing
consistent golf he continued to win 5/3. Our next match is
against Bradford away on the 11th of June. Thanks
to William Rae and Matthew Weldon for their support.
JUNIOR TEAM v WEST BRADFORD
21ST May 2006
Our 5th match of the season was against
West Bradford at home. West Bradford were sat second in the
league 7 points behind us after our great start to the
season. Once again the weather was awful, raining from the
start and getting heavier throughout! The team this week was
Oliver Young, Chris Wilcox(c), Chris Watts and Chris
Woodhead. William Rae was the reserve this week.
Oliver Young (4) played D. Bairstow (5) meaning Oliver had to
give 1 shot. Oliver as always played some good golf.
Oliver looked in control being 2 up after 5. Then he
advanced to 5 up after the 9th. His opponent made
a little come back in between the 10th and the
13th getting the match back to 3up in Oliver's
favour. Oliver then made a great birdie on the 14
th to go dormie 4up. Showing his determination
then made a birdie on the 15th to win 5/3.
Chris Wilcox (8) played D. Brook (12). GREAT ESCAPE PART
3! Chris had to give 3 shots to his opponent. After
loosing the first hole Chris battled back with birdies at the
2nd and 3rd to go from 1 down to 1 up.
He then lost the fourth and the match was all square after
5. After some good play from his partner he lost the
6th and was still 1 down at the turn. Chris then
lost the 13th which he was giving a shot on but
recovered well on the 14th hole. From the tee on
the 14th Chris ended up behind a tree and responded
from this position by playing a magnificent shot to 8ft from the
hole for 2. He then made the birdie put to go back to all
square. Chris then lost the 16th where he was
once again giving a shot and could only make a half on the
17th meaning he was 1 down going down the
18th. Both players missed the green to the right
but this thankfully worked in Chris's favour because he found his
ball but his opponent didn't. Chris then chipped on and made
4 to win the hole and get a good half. Chris Watts (9) played D. Virr (18). Chris had to
give away 7 shots to his opponent so started fiercely with 3
birdies putting him 3 up after 3. Chris was still 3 up after
5. A good run from his opponent saw Chris loose the
6th, 7th, 8th, and 9
th, mainly due to giving shots, leaving him now 1 down
at the turn. Chris making a par at the 10th saw himself go 2 down when his opponent also made par but with a
shot. After a half at the 11th when Chris was
still 2 down, he struck back. Hitting a great tee shot on
the 12th he was 10ft from the pin, he then holed the
put for birdie 2 and took the match back to 1 down. Chris
then was unfortunate to loose the 13th and then halved
the 14th with pars. Then Chris won the
15th with yet another par. Chris having to give
another shot on the 16th made another par but lost the
hole to net birdie. Chris then making 5 down the
17th halved the hole and lost 2/1.
Chris Woodhead
(12) played M. Ramsden (24). Chris gave 9 shots to his
opponent. Chris won the 1st with a par then halved the
second and third with pars as well. Chris then lost the
fourth to another par. Chris then won the 5th and
6th with a par and a birdie. Chris then halved
the 7th meaning he remained 2 up. Chris then made
a great up and down on the 8th for par but lost the
hole to a par with a shot. Chris then made birdie at the
9th to go 2 up. After loosing the 10th
he was 1 up then he made par on the 11th to go back to
2 up. After a par on the 12th Chris was still 2
up. Chris then made pars at the 13th,
14th and 15th to win 5/3.
William
Rae played as our reserve. Due to the awful weather at the
turn William and his opponent decided to call it a day and walk
in.
Our next match is against Ben Rhydding at home on
Sunday the 28th of May. This is the return
fixture from our first match of the season. When we played
Ben Rhydding away we won 6/2. Thanks to Matthew Stanworth
and Matthew Weldon for their support.
JUNIOR TEAM v BAILDON GOLF CLUB
14th May 2006 (Away)
Our
4th match of the 2006 season was away at Baildon.
After a great week of weather we were unlucky with the weather on
the day, which unfortunately was terrible. It rained for the
front nine and just after that had nicely cleared up the fog moved
in making seeing even to the fairways from the tee almost
impossible. Chris Watts returned after being absent last
week. Therefore this week's team was Oliver Young, Chris
Wilcox (c), Chris Watts and Chris Woodhead. Oliver Young
(4) played T. Usher (1). Oliver has had a good start in the
junior team this year winning all 3 previous matches. Oliver
was receiving 2 shots from Tom this week. During the match
both players played consistently all the way through. Tom
matches Oliver's, as usual, brilliant long game and Oliver matched
Toms, once again as usual, brilliant short game. This meant
that neither player could gather a lead from the other, so the match
never went above 2 either way. The match was all square after
17 and unfortunately the match went Baildon's way meaning an unlucky
1 down loss for Oliver.
Chris Wilcox (8) played T. Forster (8).
After the last 2 dramatic recoveries from Chris Wilcox we did not
know what to expect at all today. Could we possibly see him 4
down with 5 to play again and make a brilliant come back? Chris
became 1 up after 1 and managed to hold that lead on the second with
a great up and down. After making a birdie at the firth the
match was once again 1 up to Chris after he had lost the
third. At the turn Chris was still 1 up and after a good run
became 4 up after 14, meaning he was dormie 4 up! He went on
to win 3/2.
Chris Watts (9) played J. Taylor (9). Chris had
a good start and was 3 up after 4 holes. The match went
back to 2 up to Chris after a magnificent birdie from his opponent
on the 5th. Chris was still 2up at the turn after
playing an extremely controlled front nine. After making a par
and a birdie at the 11th and 12th Chris's
opponent had fought back to all square. Chris then won the
15th even though by this point the fog was so bad that
off the tee not even the fairway was visible. This meant he
was once again 1 up. Chris then holed a 10 foot put on the
16th for a half meaning he was 1 up with 2 to play.
Unfortunately the bad weather got the better of his forced guess
work and he ended up loosing the last 2 holes, after some bad
fortune off both tee's, meaning he lost 1 down. Chris Woodhead
(12) played J. Stevens (9). Chris got off to a magnificent
start winning 3 of the first 4 holes. Always looking in
control of the front nine Chris became 5 up by the turn. After
loosing the 10th and 12th Chris found himself
3 up and on the back foot. Chris struggling to win holes due
to the new found back 9 form of his opponent and the rapidly
worsening fog started to worry. Chris then lost the 15th
due to not being able to see the best line to hit from the
tee. Both players then made brilliant up and downs on the par
3 sixteenth to half the hole meaning Chris was now dormie 2
up. A canned monster put later from his opponent at the 17
th for birdie meant that it was going down the
last. Chris making good club selection from the tee won the
last to win 2 up. Our next match is against West Bradford at home
on Sunday the 21st of May. If the result of this
match is good then hopefully we will be top of the league. So
far we have won 25 of 32 points after only dropping 1 point at
home.
JUNIOR TEAM v CALVERLEY GOLF CLUB
7th May 2006 (home)
We have had a
great start to the season so far winning both our previous
matches. Our third match of the season was at home against
last season's league runners up Calverley. Due to an absence
on the day, Chris Watts who had Yorkshire coaching, an alteration to
the team from the week before had to be made. Robert Malloy
(13) was brought in to replace him.
Oliver Young (4) has had a
good start in the junior team this year winning both of his previous
matches. Against Calverley this week Oliver had to give 4
shots to his opponent. Oliver had a steady start against his
opponent and the match was level after 6 holes. Looking in
control through the first nine couldn't pull away a large
lead. The match went to Oliver being 3 up after 15 holes
keeping control the entire way. Oliver kept playing
consistently and ran out a 2/1 victory.
Chris Wilcox
(GREAT ESCAPE PART 2). After last weeks events in Chris's match
where he won the last 5 holes to win his match 1 up you wouldn't
believe this week would be a similar story. Chris started with
a half at the first after they both made birdies. The match
was still all square after 2 but unfortunately things took a turn
for the worse from there. As last week Chris was 4 down after
the 13th leaving him 4 down with 5 to play. Once
again when Chris got to the 18th tee he had battled the
match back to all square. Both players missed the green from
the tee leaving difficult second shots for them both. Chris
was unlucky with his par put which looked to be going in then lipped
out leaving him a tap in to half the match.
Chris Woodhead (12)
once again played his match of the stick end due to both players
being off 12 handicap. Chris started off with 3 pars and was 1
up after 3 holes. After the 5th the match was all
square after both players having a consistent start. Chris
pulled away a little and became 3 up after 9 holes. Chris had
some bad luck on the 12th which put the match back to
being 2 up. Chris then made 2 pars on the 13th and
the 14th to put himself Dormie 4 up. He then made a
simple par up the 15th to run out a 5/3 victory.
Robert Malloy (13) made his first junior team appearance of
2006. Robert had a good start and was 2 up after the
5th. Robert looked to be controlling his match all
the way and was not behind again after gaining the lead.
Robert playing well and consistently didn't give any easy
opportunities for a come back from his opponent. Robert won
the 14th hole with a regulation par 4 to take the match
to Dormie 4 up. Robert then made a simple par up the
15th to win 4/3.
Finally on behalf of all the
juniors I would like to thank Ralph Anderson for helping out by
covering for Northcliffe's junior organiser Phil Chester who was on
holiday. Also the support from Matthew Stanworth and William
Rae is greatly appreciated, thanks very much boys.
JUNIOR TEAM V BRADFORD
Monday 1st May (home) Our second
match of the season was against Bradford golf club round our home
course. We played the same team as last week which was Oliver
Young, Chris Wilcox, Chris Watts and Chris Woodhead.
Oliver Young (4) received 2 shots from Sam Jewell (2).
Oliver getting to a fine start was 3 under par gross after four
holes which left him 3up. He went on to be 4 up at the
turn. Oliver held a strong lead through the back 9 which never
dropped to less than 3up. This match continued to result in a good
4/3 victory for Oliver. Chris Wilcox (8) GREAT ESCAPE! Chris
Played Tom Marshall (5). Our team captain got off to an
unfortunate start loosing both of the first two holes to birdies
from his opponent. He fought back and the match became level
